Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Louise from London band Weekday Social to find out more…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the name?
We are three piece band consisting of me on guitar and vocals, Gavin on bass and Ben on drums. Gavin and I met in 2023 when he responded to my ad to start a band on a Join My Band. We had a coffee and a little jam and then he posted again and we quickly sourced a drummer, Ivan. Ivan ended up moving back to Bulgaria last summer, but we went back to Join My Band and luckily acquired Ben pretty quickly. I didn’t really want to go through a process of auditioning multiple people so was relieved when after one practice it clicked with him. In terms of the name, it took us ages to think of something and then eventually Gavin threw this one into the mix. At the time I was embracing true hustle culture of working in an ad agency and then socialising a lot in the evening so the name kind of resonated and it also fit well with the genre we’re influenced by, kind of like, American Football, for example.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
I grew up listening to Alanis Morissette and Sheryl Crow – who are big songwriting inspirations for me – in the back of the car in the mid-90s and then ventured off into a world of S Club 7 and Britney Spears. A turning point came when I was 11 and Busted and Avril Lavigne came into the mix. Whatever your view on them is, I definitely think they were gateway artists for “real” guitar music and by the time I was in secondary school I was getting my mum to pick me up a Kerrang! magazine every Wednesday. I went through a massive grunge phase discovering Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains etc. before getting fully obsessed with emo and pop punk in the form of My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and Paramore (who I have followed since their first Kerrang! feature). I’m still a massive fan of alternative American bands which definitely influences Weekday Social’s sound, but am also very open to more mainstream artists with Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and the Last Dinner Party frequently appearing in my Spotify On Repeat.
How would you describe your sound?
Nostalgic, honest, heartfelt and catchy.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
Our latest song on Spotify is called Five Years or So. I wrote it a few years ago upon return from a short trip to Brussels! It is basically about escaping everyday routine and having time to think about who you really are/what you want in life. It has a pretty retro/90s influence to it and our friends know the words now so I think it is catchy.
What’s your local music scene like?
The London music scene is very mixed. We enjoy playing venues that have a good legacy of giving bands a platform and not just pushing you to sell tickets. The Dublin Castle and Good Mixer are honourable mentions here. We also had an ace show at Trinity Bar out in Harrow where Stephen (the promoter) runs a club night called Yuck! which I would highly recommend. We were on first but stayed super late – who knew Harrow was such a great Saturday night out! All the other bands were great and cool to hang out with too.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
We want to record another couple of songs and keep gigging. We would love an opportunity to play a festival but this hasn’t come up yet!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Hayley Williams for sure, but she would show up my singing. I think I’d have to just play guitar for that. I’d also say Alanis Morissette, but really same comment!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
I managed to play a few songs with my low guitar string tuned to F the other night and kept looking at Gavin like it was the bass sounding off – pretty embarrassing but a very forgiving crowd who quickly forgot! We also had a gig once where the original sound engineer didn’t turn up and then the guy doing the sound was really struggling and kind of messed it up for us. I asked him genuinely if he was a real sound engineer and everyone thought I was being insulting but I was just wondering. The band on after us had no sound coming out of the mic for the first two songs and people seemed to have travelled from all over to see them. It was pretty chaotic, I’m not sure it was actually funny!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
We are very friendly and ordinary people. When a photographer asked us what our aspiration for the band was Gavin said, “we want to be your mate’s mate’s band”. We don’t want you to come to our shows to make money off your ticket, we just want to play to people and make some friends.
