Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Brighton based artist Anna Searight to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’ve lived in Brighton longer than anywhere else so I consider myself a Brightonian! I first got into music at the age of 13 when I taught myself the guitar and started playing and writing songs. It’s just me, but my husband is a drummer and a producer and we collaborate with all my tracks.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
My earliest influence was Tracy Chapman and other female, guitar playing artists such as Alanis Morissette. But then I discovered Radiohead, who are a huge influence. I also love Björk for her experimental textures and Imogen Heap for all her lush harmonies. More contemporary loves include Phoebe Bridgers, I love her gentle vocal tone and her soundscaping.
How would you describe your sound?
I’d say atmospheric, and experimental, with a focus on ethereal, dreamlike production.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
It’s called Cards on the Table… it’s about the bittersweet process of creating music and how you have to lay your soul bare.
What’s your local music scene like?
Brighton has a great music scene but it does sadden me that venues are struggling.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
I’ve got a full EP which comes out in October which, alongside 4 vocal tracks, features two instrumental tracks that I’m really proud of and then… it’s back to finishing the next tracks I’m currently recording!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
That’s so hard. In my wildest dreams I would love to collaborate with Imogen Heap! She also seems so friendly and nice!
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
My first ever live performance was pretty funny. It went really well but as I was walking off stage I was blinded by the lights and didn’t realise the stage had a curved corner so I proceeded to fall off the stage!! Luckily there were some soft drum cases which broke my fall! Another time, I also had someone accidentally kick my mic stand mid-performance and I felt something dripping from my lip… turned out the mic had split my lip! So… basically live performances can be dangerous! haha!
Upcoming live dates and performances
Thursday 25th September 2025 – Ironworks Studios, Brighton
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
That’s another hard one! I guess I have to boast that I am the pet parent to THE best dog in the world (not biased at all), he falls asleep as I write songs. It’s blissful.
