Every day people are carrying out good deeds so we decided to celebrate the great work that charities, community groups and campaigners do with a regular feature on Tuesdays, to tie-in with #CharityTuesday on social media.
This week, we caught up with nationwide charity MOVE Against Cancer to find out more.
How do you support people?
MOVE Against Cancer supports those impacted by cancer to live an active and fulfilling life because movement matters. Our programme of support includes:
- A bespoke online movement programme for 13-30-year-olds with cancer, run by our cancer rehab specialists and informed by young people themselves.
- 125+ community-led 5k Your Way groups across the UK and Ireland, located at designated parkruns and providing movement based peer support on a monthly basis.
- An online information hub full of movement videos, inspiring blogs, informative workshops, community resources and the MOVE Against Cancer Podcast.
What geographical areas do you support people in?
Nationwide.
How did you come to be founded?
Founded in 2016 by international athlete Gemma Hillier-Moses, the charity’s purpose was and still remains to provide something Gemma never got herself: access to free, professional advice and support on how to keep moving when living with and beyond cancer.
How many people do you have working at MOVE Against Cancer?
We have a small but mighty team of 4 full time staff members: CEO, Fundraising Manager, Programme Coordinator and Cancer Rehab Specialist. 2 part time staff members: Operations Director and Marketing and Comms Lead. A freelance Community Engagement Coordinator and freelance Social Media Lead, plus a team of 5 freelance Cancer Rehab Specialists. We are so proud to have over 600 volunteer Ambassadors supporting our 5k Your Way initiative.
How can people support you?
Your donations help us support people with cancer to get moving. Whether it’s monthly donations, taking on a fundraising challenge, volunteering for us, or advocating the benefits of physical activity for those impacted by cancer, it all helps us to make a real impact.
Have you faced any challenges along the way?
As a charity reliant on grants and donations, inconsistent funding poses a significant risk to programme continuity and growth. To mitigate this, we actively diversify our funding sources by applying to multiple funders, cultivating community donations, and developing partnerships to build long-term financial resilience.
Do you have any events coming up and where can people find out about these events?
Our 5k Your Way groups meet up on the last Saturday of every month at over 125 parkrun locations. We encourage anyone impacted by cancer including those living with and beyond cancer, their family, friends and those working in cancer services to join us. Do as much or as little of the 5k as you want to, and do it YOUR way be it walking, jogging or running, or just come and join us for coffee and a chat. Head to our website to find your nearest group.
Is there any advice you could give to other agencies?
Don’t just design programmes, co-create them with the exact people who will benefit from them.
