Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Derby artist Trenton Green to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
Derby and I found a book of Beatles tablatures called The Beatles Complete. It belonged to my dad.
Trenton Green is the name of the council state I grew up on in Derby. I mean no one is called Trenton from the UK right. My actual name is Chris.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Smiths, Radiohead, U2, the Longpigs, Oasis.
More recently The National, Fontaines D.C., Biffy Clyro and some other less known artists.
How would you describe your sound?
It’s rooted in my indie rock sensibilities with some pop craft and northern wit I guess. Sonically guitars tend to lean toward a blend of Johnny Marr and The Edge’s sound and style.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
The Miami EP was inspired simply by the amount of time I’ve spent there in recent years performing shows. As a solo artist long times away in a strange land gives you a lot of free time where the city seeps into your psyche. Kill the Beat is the only track directly about Miami itself. The other tracks are not about Miami but they did find their shoes there. Chasing Tomorrow was about that feeling of seemingly getting nowhere whilst giving your all and finally making peace with that. Tides was about my on-off relationship with faith. Slippy Slope was written during Covid lockdowns and the fear of increasing loss of freedoms and how helpless we were to escape those creeping restrictions. Forever Is a whole lot of nonsense about unrequited lust carried by a great top line melody. Sometimes melodies just come fully formed with a lot of words and just can’t get away from them 😂
What’s your local music scene like?
There’s a scene just like in most cities. Last year I played a sold out show at Dubrek after my debut EP Northern Lights reached No 20 on the UK iTunes chart.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
I’m in the US until Feb 7 playing solo shows.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Not in particular. There’s a few unknown musicians I’m looking to work with. As a side note, Chasing Tomorrow was originally written for Liam Gallagher. It didn’t pan out in the end but I’m actually grateful as it’s one of my fave tracks on the album.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
Well I once smashed my guitar around a palm tree in Ayia Napa because it wouldn’t stay in tune. Safe to say that guitar will never be in tune again.
Do you have any upcoming live dates and performances?
I am currently performing in the US on the world’s largest cruise ship Icon of the Seas until Feb 7 2026.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
Well most of my music is recorded on the road. 80 percent is done in a tiny ship cabin while I’m in the US. This can be challenging and not ideal but makes it all the more satisfying to see the results of what can be achieved in this unconventional environment.
