Every day people are carrying out good deeds so we decided to celebrate the great work that charities, community groups and campaigners do with a regular feature on Tuesdays, to tie-in with #CharityTuesday on social media.
This week, we caught up with charity Splott Community Volunteers to find out more.
How do you support people?
We’re a community-based poverty alleviation charity that provides vital services and resources for those in food, fuel and social poverty.
What geographical areas do you support people in?
Cardiff, Wales.
How did you come to be founded?
10 years ago, three local legends Fred and Angela Bullard and Trisha Mardon decided to hold a fete to raise money to start a breakfast club to feed homeless people once a week in a local building that used to be a library.
How many people do you have working at Splott Community Volunteers?
We have four members of staff, a board of trustees and 40 volunteers.
Do you have any events coming up and where can people find out about these events?
We have our Christmas Grotto Event on Saturday 13 December from 12-4pm. Our annual Christmas event has it all – food, fun, stalls, raffles, a choir, games. It’s free entry, but you can pay £5 to visit Santa and Mrs Claus in their magical grotto where you get a present after a chat with Santa.
Is there any advice you could give to other agencies?
Never give up. Find what your community is missing, then find ways to fill that gap. Everyone who volunteers for us has ties to this community. There’s always a way!
You can find out more about Splott Community Volunteers on their website or via Bluesky, Facebook, Instagram or YouTube.
You can visit them in person. They are open from 10:00am to 12:00pm (at least) every Monday to Friday and can be found at the back of The Old STAR Centre, 2 Splott Road, Cardiff, CF24 2BZ, opposite the entrance to A1 Tyres.
