Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with New Barnet based artist BaoBou to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from the Netherlands and have lived around the world. I made music as a kid and then picked it up while living in Hong Kong. When I came to London, I really got it going.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Some people I’ve always admired were Prince and Terence Trent D’Arby for recording so much singlehandedly. Today most people recognise influences of Steely Dan, Santana, Little Feat and maybe a smidge of Elvis Costello.
How would you describe your sound?
Very much a 70s sound, although I try to escape that.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
The album “Unplugged”. I wanted to do a live album but that’s quite tough, and instead I recorded it at home as live as possible.
What’s your local music scene like?
Amazing. North London is always buzzing.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
At least one more album. I’ve already got several finished songs and some works in progress. Also loads more playing live!
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
James Blake
Jacob Collier
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
The first time I played a cover it was Queen/Somebody to Love, and when it came to the part where they sing “Give me somebody to love, Give me somebody to love, etc”, the whole pub joined in and gave me goosebumps.
Do you have any upcoming live dates and performances?
I have regular gigs at the Two Bridges in London.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I started later in life, and I don’t have the illusion that I’ll be famous; but every time someone says they loved that song or that gig or they reach out, that’s always a win.
