Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Vern from Brighton based duo Blueprint Moon to find out more…
Who is in the duo, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the name?
We met in Brighton many years ago. I am originally from West London and Sam grew up in Devon. The name came from the idea that Keith Moon was actually an android and that the version that ended up drumming in The Who was actually as escaped prototype, based on a botched blueprint.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
From growing up until present day, our influences have been pretty constant: The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Stevie Wonder, Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix, Steely Dan, Little Feat, The Who, Led Zeppelin, Prince, Jeff Buckley, Kate Bush, Radiohead, The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers, Alanis Morissette, Paul Simon, Bowie, Aimee Mann, Pearl Jam, QOTSA, Nirvana, Sheryl Crow, MJ.
How would you describe your sound?
We’re quite eclectic. I was speaking to someone the other day about this. It’s generally not considered a smart move to not hone 1 sound down and stick to an identifiable genre, but we love making all kinds of music. Often, we get bored of whatever we worked on last, so as a reactionary process, we end up doing something that sounds quite different to the last thing we did. If you zoom out at our body of work, you can probably find groups of songs that marry to different genres – e.g. some rocky, some with an electronica vibe, some with an an acoustic sound etc etc.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
The latest one is called ‘Horizon Machine’ – it’s a sort of submission that AI is coming for all of our jobs… how uplifting!
What’s your local music scene like?
Brighton is thriving for music – there’s so much going on here! We don’t tend to play live very much these days – we’re more studio based, but there is a great live scene here, should we ever consider leaving the comfort of our studio…
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
We’re just going to keep doing what we’ve always done and that is to write and produce as much music as possible. We’re toying with the idea of a vinyl release – the tricky part with be deciding what to include on it.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
We’d love to collaborate with Lewis Capaldi or Cliff Richard. Ideally, both at the same time.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
We’ve been known to perform in ski suits, BT engineer boiler suits, dressing gowns and monk habits. We once performed naked at Butlins in Bognor Regis with Fred Dinage in the audience, but were regrettably arrested on stage before we could play the encore.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
We have played numerous sessions as session musicians for pop artists, such as Lewis Capaldi, Anne-Marie, Benson Boone and many others, but it seems like AI has nicked our jobs, so that ship may well have sailed…
