Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Buckinghamshire based artist Ben McKelvey to find out more…
Where are you from and how did you first get into music?
I’m from Essex originally but moved round a lot. I’m now based in Buckinghamshire. I first got into music air drumming to Bruce Springsteen’s Born To Run. I formed a punk band and was the drummer from 14-21 and then picked up the guitar and went solo.
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Growing up was the Jam, Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Cash. Not much has changed to be honest but I’m a huge Brian Fallon and Frank Turner fan.
How would you describe your sound?
A folk punk storyteller.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
My latest release is called ‘Kids Again This Christmas’. It’s what I call a happy/sad song. It’s about trying to remember the important things in life while growing up.
What’s your local music scene like?
Not much round in the suburbs!
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
A ten year anniversary of my debut album coming out in February. A new solo album coming out late 2026.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Brian Fallon or E from the Eels.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
A lot of funny tour stories. Most of them probably shouldn’t be published.
Do you have an upcoming live dates and performances?
Not right now.
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
I’m a hard working DIY musician who is going to make records until I die.
You can find out more about Ben via Facebook, Instagram, Spotify, Threads or YouTube.
