Every Monday we will be bringing you interviews with UK or Ireland artists for Independent Music Monday. Recently we caught up with Scottish band Juniper Three to find out more…
Who is in the band, how did you meet, where are you from and how did you come up with the name?
Juniper Three are Laura Hill, Outi Karhu and Aimee Penman. We’re from Renfrewshire and Ayrshire. We met through the Glasgow music scene and found we had a mutual appreciation for vocal harmonies, and that our voices blended well. The name took a while to settle on but we went with the theme of nature…
Who were your musical influences when you were growing up and who are your influences now?
Ooh, that’s a mix! We all grew up in the ’90s so were influenced by the eclectic sounds of the day (from Mariah Carey to Alanis Morissette) as well as having an appreciation of singer/songwriters of the ’70s (Joni Mitchell, Carole King and CSN). Our songwriting as a group is more influenced by life experiences rather than thinking about a particular sound/style.
How would you describe your sound?
Vocal harmony is at the heart of Juniper Three where our interweaving voices and collaborative songwriting create a tapestry of genres.
What is your latest release called and what was the influence behind it?
More Than Bones, the first single from our debut album Spiral due out in Spring 2026. The song was inspired by an eye injury which led to ruminating on how lost you feel without light. This led to thinking about the legacy we leave behind. It’s a warm, cosy-sounding song that speaks of hope, personal growth and leaving a legacy. Its sonic landscape brings to mind the effortless charm of the 70s with its intimacy and live feel.
What’s your local music scene like?
We all live outside of Glasgow but the city itself has a very vibrant music scene as does the West of Scotland in general. The standard of songwriting and musicianship is very high and we’re very grateful to be part of it.
What do you have planned for the next 12 months?
We have another three singles from the album to release with the next one due out on Thursday 5th February 2026. We will also be launching and performing the album around the country for the rest of the year.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
We’d love to perform live with an orchestra, such as the RSNO or SCO.
Any funny stories surrounding your live performances?
One time we had to go on stage as ‘Juniper Two’ as one of the band members decided to go for a last minute toilet break just before we went on… cue awkward silence filling!
What is the one thing that you want readers to know about you?
We have a silly influence on each other, especially when performing and recording. We therefore have quite the catalogue of bloopers, some of which we have shared on social media!
